The Professional Amateur
The Positive Mindset Series
If it don’t make money, it don’t make cents right?
Somewhere along the way, we were taught that if something doesn’t generate income, it somehow matters less.
Less important. Less valuable. Less serious.
I don’t believe that.
A few years ago, the idea of becoming what I call a professional amateur really clicked for me. Not in the sense of being “average,” but in choosing to pursue something with passion, discipline, curiosity, and consistency — without needing it to become your full-time paycheck to justify its importance.
You can train hard, study deeply, create intentionally, and care tremendously about something simply because it makes you feel alive.
That counts.

The Professional Amateur Mindset
A professional amateur is someone who approaches life with purpose.
You show up with effort.
You sharpen your craft.
You invest your time wisely.
But your worth is not attached to applause, algorithms, followers, contracts, or income.
That’s freedom.
The world loves to measure success in dollars and titles, but some of the healthiest, happiest, most fulfilled people I know are deeply committed to passions that never became careers.
Bodybuilding.
Running.
Cooking.
Sourdough making.
Comedy.
Writing.
Martial arts.
Plant Parents.
Strength training.
Cycling.
Not everything meaningful has to be monetized.
(I mean there is definitely a market and way to monetize AnYTHING these days but let’s leave that for another article)
Sometimes the return on investment is
Enervy.
Community.
Confidence.
Peace.
Longevity.
Sometimes the reward is simply becoming more you.
Time Is the Real Currency
The older I get, the more I realize time is the true currency.
Not just how much time you have — but how fully alive you feel while living it.
Doing something you genuinely love stretches life in a different way.
It creates presence.
Flow state.
Purpose.
You stop surviving the week and start participating in your own life again.
That hobby you protect after work?
That early morning workout?
That random passion project nobody understands?
Those moments are not distractions from life.
They are life.
Don’t Let Negativity Define You
One of the biggest mindset shifts is refusing to diminish yourself because something isn’t profitable or externally validated.
You do not need permission to care deeply about something.
You do not need an audience to make your passion legitimate.
And you definitely should not allow cynicism to shrink your enthusiasm.
A negative mindset convinces people to abandon things that make them healthier, sharper, and happier simply because they aren’t “productive enough.”
But joy is productive.
Movement is productive.
Creativity is productive.
Connection is productive.
A fulfilled human performs better in every area of life.
Keep Your Mind, Body & Spirit FIT
To me, being FIT goes beyond aesthetics or performance.
It means staying engaged with life.
Mind — continue learning, exploring, staying curious.
Body — move often, recover intentionally, respect your health.
Spirit — protect the things that make you feel grounded, inspired, and connected.
The professional amateur understands that fulfillment is part of wellness.
Not everything has to become a business plan.
Some things are meant to nourish you.
And maybe that’s the real win:
building a life where passion, movement, curiosity, and purpose keep you feeling young long after the clock says otherwise.
Stay FIT.
Mind. Body. Spirit.
